Former journalist Amy Morenz, 53, died March 6, 2008, from complications of brain cancer. A graduate of Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, Morenz was an active metroplex journalist.
Morenz worked for American Community Newspapers from 2003 to 2006, the Southlake Times and Plano Star Courier. As community editor for the Southlake Times, it was named the second best weekly in Texas. While in Plano, she won third place in features and fourth place in news writing in the Texas Press Association's 2006 contest. She and the Plano Star Courier staff earned second place from the Suburbia Newspapers Association for the 2005 election. She expanded coverage of Plano City Hall, started a health care beat, and wrote a six-part series about her brain cancer experience.
Morenz spent 10 years in marketing and communications with Cooper & Lybrand, now PrinwaterhouseCoopers; she also served in various public relation roles for telecommunications companies, including Alcatel, Primemedia Workplace Learning, and Ericsson. After her diagnosis, Morenz was an active participant in the National Brain Tumor Foundation's Angel Walk event and the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
She is survived by her mother, Patricia Morenz of Keller; sister and brother-in-law, Holly and Paul Wesebaum of Southlake; niece and husband, Hilary and Bryan Rabeler of Keller; and niece, Catherine Wesebaum of Hurst.
