Dr. William Alan Smith, DDS

November 11, 1954 – February 2nd, 2022

On February 2nd, 2022, Dr. Alan Smith, DDS of Sherman, TX, joined his beloved wife, Sandi, for their final vacation in the sky. Dr. Smith and Sandi loved nothing more than traveling the world together, spending time with their friends and different ministries. They now rest in peace, hand in hand, together.

William “Alan” Smith was born on Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany on November 11, 1954 to Billy F. Smith and the late Addiene Smith.  Dr. Smith moved to Richardson, TX in 1962 and graduated from J. J. Pearce High School in 1972. He attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX as a Pre-dental major and went on to The University Health San Antonio School of Dentistry.

Dr. Smith owned and operated his own dental practice in Whitesboro, TX for nearly 33 years.  He supported the local community with top-notch dental care with a smile. He was admired by his patients and was always supported by his loving and devoted office staff.  He enjoyed taking his service to others by volunteering his services with his church and going to Copper Canyon, Mexico to provide dental service to the Tarahumara Indians on a medical mission trip.

Dr. Smith was a man of great faith and was a very active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Sherman, TX for many years. In addition, he was a former Board Member and past President of Wesley Village in Denison, TX.

Dr. Smith and Sandi were married on June 18, 1994 in Richardson, TX. They enjoyed fly-fishing and cruising, especially in Alaska. They always took an annual trip to Colorado, a place that ended up being very special in both their hearts. Most of all they loved to travel and explore worldwide. Spain, Russia, Canada and all over Europe are some of the trips they took through their 19 years of marriage.  Sandi joined the angels in heaven on March 18, 2015.

Dr. Smith is survived by his father, Billy F. Smith; two daughters, Kate Delaune, her husband Bert Aguayo of Carrollton, TX and Libby Delaune of Newington, CT; three grandsons, Christian, Matthew, Jacob, as well as sister and brother-in-law, Lark and Robert Schott. He was preceded in death by his wife Sandi Smith, his mother Addiene Smith, his stepmother Joyce Smith, his brother Craig Skelton, and his beloved niece, Stormie Schott.

Mark Woods

This was taken in August of 2015 at a Rough Riders baseball game in Frisco, TX. It was the last time I saw him in person, though we talked on the phone from time to time after that.

Though we knew each other from band at RNJH, he was in a brass section, I a woodwind one. The first that I recall us ever "interacting" was on the football field. We both played RSI football, and our teams met for a scrimmage one weekday evening. Alan was the opposing quarterback, and he disrespected one of my teammates. This lead to a shoving match between the two of us which ended in a stalemate - both of us were smart enough to keep our helmets on. I got to run laps for my transgression (but I think my coach was pleased that I stood up for a teammate).

The last I saw of him before our 40th class reunion was at Texas Tech as freshmen. We were both on the same floor in the old Wells / Carpenter dorm. He was a class act then, as he was till the day he died. As his medical issues started to mount, I think he decided to just be kept comfortable and wait for his reunion with Sandi.

That's my wife Denise to my left, actually watching the ballgame and ignoring Alan and myself as we talked about everything under the sun except baseball.
